Yes, you can! Springfield’s own Food Channel takes you through the basics of canning your own garden-fresh veggies, sauces, salsas and more. http://www.foodchannel.com/stories/1931-yes-you-can

Buy one, give one programs are all the rage, and here’s the latest: buy a Solio universal solar charger and the company gifts one to a family living on less than a dollar a day. Bright! http://www.solio.com/campaigns/buyonegiveone/

And last, William Kamkwamba, the 22-year-old author of “The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind”, returns to TED to discuss power, energy, and the ultimate DIY project. http://www.ted.com/talks/william_kamkwamba_how_i_harnessed_the_wind.html

The waste stream generated by the construction industry is enormous, and as green building advocates we want to be constantly looking for ways to reduce this. If you are “part of the problem” or just a creative thinker who would like to be part of the solution, this is a golden opportunity.

Waste Management District “O” annually awards grants up to $50,000 for waste diversion projects in our area. The next cycle of applications for this money begins October 1 with a deadline of December 31. The District “O” staff will help you complete an application and can assist you in identifying ways to recycle the materials that are collected.

So, if you don’t already have some ideas about how to reduce our waste stream, put on your thinking caps.

Get competitive, get creative, get green!
